Wealth and children: mere luxury or eternal good?

A major intellectual error is commonly made in the understanding of verse 46 of Surah Al-Kahf: "Wealth and children are the adornment of the life of this world, and the remainder of righteous deeds...". Translators and commentators place "wealth and children" on one side and "good deeds" on the other, as if wealth and children are lesser things and "the remainder of righteous deeds" are a completely separate set of good deeds.

But if we consider the nature of the Word of God, a very different and constructive reality emerges. Which is the exact opposite. In fact, the second part of this verse is describing the reality of the first part (wealth and children).

Refutation of artificial comparison

Usually, translators, by their own admission, add words like "then" or "only" to this verse, presenting wealth and children as temporary and perhaps worthless things. However, there is no such division in the Word of Allah that would consider worldly blessings as an obstacle to the path of righteousness. In fact, seeing wealth and children as the opposite of "the remnants of the righteous" is an artificial division.

In terms of Arabic grammar and rhetoric, this verse does not compare wealth and children to good deeds, but rather sets out their true value and worth. When we add words like "then" or "but" on our part, we distort the great truth that Allah is expressing. Wealth and children are the foundations on which the edifice of the "remaining righteous" stands.

Children: Eternal Good and Human Continuity

Children are not merely a temporary decoration of the world, but they are the continuation of the Ashraf al-Makhluqat on which the entire system of the universe depends. These children are the "remains" that continue the name, work and worship of man after his departure. They are the real capital of the universe and Allah has declared the continuation of these Ashraf al-Makhluqat as the "best hope" (khayr umla) because the human race is the trustee of Allah's Caliphate on earth.

Wealth: A means of reward and the basis of worship

Wealth is the grace of Allah and it is the power that forms the basis of all acts of worship. Be it the preservation of health, the upbringing of children, or the performance of pillars like Zakat and Hajj—all of these are connected to the causes of wealth. Wealth is the thing that turns into “reward” (reward) when it is used to run the system of life. This division into wealth being “this world” and glorifying “the Hereafter” is completely unnatural. Wealth itself is the enduring good that becomes the source of eternal reward for man.

Wealth is the grace of Allah and is the result of human actions in terms of causes. It is not possible to separate it from acts of worship, because:

Basic Needs and Health: Human survival and health, which are the first prerequisites for all forms of worship, depend on material means.

Pillars of Islam: Be it Zakat, Hajj, or general charity, all these great acts of worship are based on wealth.

When the action is correct and the acquisition and use of wealth is permissible, the entire act becomes an act of worship. Whether a person spends that wealth on himself or his children, he elevates it to the level of "the remnants of righteousness."

Philosophy of existence versus use

The real problem is not the "existence" of wealth and children, but their "use". Fitnah arises when these blessings are used to rebel against the commands of Allah. But if the purpose is right, then this "decoration" of this world becomes the "best reward" of the Hereafter.

The original system of the universe

The real capital of the world is children because they are the continuation of life, and wealth is an essential means of maintaining this continuity. Allah Almighty has made it clear in this verse that while these two things are the adornment of life, they are also the real "remaining good deeds" (the remaining good deeds) which are the best in terms of reward and reward with Allah.

The result of the word

We must understand that the existence of wealth and children is good and their use, whether on oneself or on children, becomes a lasting act in the Hereafter. This is the origin of the system of the universe and this is the "hope" that never ends. There is no contradiction in the word of Allah; wealth and children are the assets that Allah has called "the remnants of the righteous", provided we see them with their original constructive purpose.

We must understand that religion and the world are not two separate islands. Wealth and children are the real foundation of the system of the universe and when they are lived within the sphere of Allah's pleasure, then these are the capitals that will never end. This is not a matter of comparison but of continuity. Wealth and children are also adornments and if they are on the right path, then these are the "remnants of the righteous" from which the best hopes can be attached
